If you cannot use your own eggs or sperm, an embryo donation programme lets you still carry your own pregnancy and give birth to your baby. At the Malpani Infertility Clinic in Mumbai we have run a donor embryo programme for years, and this page explains how ours works, who it is for, and what to do next. Embryo donation is also called embryo adoption.
What our programme offers
We match you with a frozen, high quality blastocyst, prepare your uterus, and transfer the embryo in a short outpatient visit. Everything happens under one roof: the clinic, the laboratory and the scans. You are cared for by Dr Aniruddha Malpani and a team who treat infertility and nothing else.
Who embryo donation is for
Couples usually come to us after one or more of these:
- Repeated IVF cycles that did not work with their own eggs or sperm.
- Poor egg or sperm quality, or early menopause.
- A genetic condition they do not want to pass on.
- A wish for a more affordable route than using both donor eggs and donor sperm separately.
Not sure if you qualify? Take our one-minute self-check.
Where the donated embryos come from
The embryos are donated by couples who completed their own family through IVF and chose to give their remaining frozen embryos to another couple rather than discard them. Because those couples already had a healthy baby from the same batch, the embryos come with proven fertility. All are vitrified Day 5 blastocysts, and we show you photos of your embryos before the transfer. You can read more about how embryo quality is graded.
How matching and treatment work
Once you decide to go ahead, we match you with suitable embryos and plan the transfer around your cycle. You take hormone tablets for about two to three weeks to prepare your lining, then come in for the transfer, which takes only a few minutes and needs no anaesthesia. For the full sequence, see our frozen embryo transfer timeline.
Where we are
Our clinic is in Colaba, Mumbai, and we care for patients who travel to us from across India and abroad. Much of the planning, including your first questions and your treatment plan, can be done by phone or WhatsApp before you travel, so you spend less time away from home.
What it costs
Embryo donation is one of the most affordable donor paths to parenthood, because you are not paying separately for an egg donor and a sperm donor. We share a clear, itemised cost estimate for your situation when you contact us. For how it compares with other options, see embryo adoption versus donor eggs and surrogacy.
Have frozen embryos you will not use?
Many couples finish their own IVF with healthy frozen embryos left over, often after a successful pregnancy or after deciding their family is complete. If that is you, donating those embryos gives another couple the chance to become parents, instead of the embryos staying in storage or being discarded. Donation is anonymous and arranged through the clinic, and once donated the embryos become the receiving couple’s own. If you have stored embryos after failed or completed IVF and want to understand your options, talk to us. It costs nothing to ask.
